U.S. Representative Cory Mills (R-FL), allegedly physically assaulted a woman (27) who was not his wife on February 21, 2025.

The D.C. Metro Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance at the woman’s highrise penthouse at her request. MPD discovered bruising on her arms which she initially said he had caused, but she later recanted.

What The Involved Parties Say

NBC’s News 4 Washington obtained multiple copies of the police report which varied in the details between them:

The first police report, provided to News4 by a source and confirmed by a second source familiar with the investigation, said: “(Her significant other for over a year) grabbed her, shoved her, and pushed her out of the door.” The report says she showed the officer “bruises on her arm which appeared fresh.”

Mills’ office has issued a statement:

“This week, law enforcement was asked to resolve a private matter at Congressman Mills’ residence. Congressman Mills vehemently denies any wrongdoing whatsoever, and is confident any investigation will clear this matter quickly.”

The woman has made her own statement:

“While the personal matter in question was emotionally charged, there was no physical altercation,” she added. “This is a deeply personal matter that is being unfairly exploited for political purposes or other motives.”

Why Is This an Ongoing Controversy?

Ed Martin, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, allegedly refused to sign the arrest warrant for the assault after it occurred. Florida Democrats are thus demanding answers over the perceived favoritism of a Trump-appointed prosecutor refusing to arrest Mills, a staunch Trump supporter and ally.

It’s normal for police and prosecutors to have a back-and-forth over whether charges are justified or not. Notably, Martin has allowed the investigation to continue. MPD also has an Internal Affairs investigation underway regarding their response at the scene and how they have handled this case so far.

It is completely plausible that Mills and the unidentified woman’s accounts are accurate and this story is being blown out of proportion because of who specifically is involved. I have submitted a FOIA request for the police incident records and any body camera footage, and I’m reserving judgment at this time until those are publicly available.

Assault or not though, Mills has still behaved inappropriately by getting in this altercation in the first place.

And the accusations of a political hookup would look less sketchy if Ed Martin’s office wasn’t declaring his office as President Trump’s personal lawyers.
